Hagi ware began when Lord Mori Terumoto invited Korean Yi Dynasty potters Ri Shakwang and Ri Kyeong to Japan during the Bunroku-Keicho Invasion (1592-98) when Toyotomi Hideyoshi sent troops to Korea. About half a century later, a group of senior disciples of Ri Shakwang's son Yamamura Shinbei Mitsumasa (Masaan, Sakunosuke), Kurazaki Gorozaemon, Akagawa Sukezaemon, and Sukeemon, moved to Sannose, Fukagawa with the permission of the domain and built a kiln. Later, in the third year of the Meireki era (1657), Yamamura Shinbei Mitsumasa's son Yamamura Heishiro Mitsutoshi also moved there and was ordered to be the general manager of the Sannose Pottery Works, and the Sannose Pottery Works was established as the domain's official kiln. This is said to be the beginning of the Hagi ware Fukagawa kiln.
