In 1969, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney, both engineers employed by Ampex, decided to create a company they called SyZyGy. Their goal was to make a marketable and inexpensive version of the game SpaceWar, which they could install in bars and restaurants, like the pinball machines and jukeboxes that reigned supreme in the electronic entertainment world. In March 1971, Nolan needed money to finance his project, so he presented his idea to Nutting Associates, who hired him. Ted Dabney joined him at Nuttings in July 1971. By the end of the summer of 1971, Nolan and Ted had completed the final prototype of their adaptation of SpaceWar: Computer Space. In November 1971, Nuttings decided to start manufacturing 1500 kiosks, and marketed Computer Space. Dave Ralston, Nuttings' sales manager, will barely manage to sell 1000 arcade machines and will be fired some time later. Computer Space will be a commercial failure. For more details on these events, please read our previous "Video Game Chronicles: Ep 03 - Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari".
