The Southern Palatinate wine grape variety archive on the edge of the Palatinate community of Weingarten was created to protect rare, native grape varieties from extinction and to preserve them for posterity in the variety of clones that still exist. There are now 130 indigenous grape varieties gathered there, all of which were secured from old vineyards and fallow vineyards or are offshoots of very old house stocks. Often these are grape varieties that have only recently been rediscovered, were thought to be extinct or were overlooked. By taking on a vine sponsorship, you are contributing directly to the continued existence of this wine-cultural variety heritage in the Southern Palatinate wine region. Get involved!
