If you are visiting Izumi City in Kagoshima Prefecture and wondering where to go for a meal, we recommend Nakamachi Shokudo. This restaurant is located in the arcade of Izumi Central Shopping Street, near Yasaka Shrine (article here), which is the home of the most famous Jizo statue in Japan. The Izumi Honmachi bus stop, where buses to Kagoshima Airport stop, is also nearby, and if you come by car, you can park in the Nakamachi Parking Lot (free) across the street. The owner is the second son of a local butcher, and is a big fan of Izumi. He is also actively involved in developing locally produced gourmet food using ingredients that Izumi City is proud of, and participated in the Show-1 Gourmet Grand Prix, the Kagoshima Shopping Street Gourmet Championship, from 2010 to 2014. You can see that he loves Izumi chicken by looking at the menu sign in front of the store. The restaurant has a tatami room where you can stretch your tired legs after sightseeing, as well as table seats for two and a counter. And here is the lunch menu you are interested in! There are a wide variety of dishes, from various set meals such as fried chicken to ramen, curry, and rice bowls. Izumi is famous for chicken, and this restaurant offers fried chicken and oyakodon at low prices. However, when I looked closely at the menu, I found three dishes that are "Nakamachi Shokudo's specialty dishes." Izumi's new satsuma soup, made with plenty of chicken and seasonal vegetables, and "shogan taki," which is very healthy and full of collagen; "Izumi Akadori Jonetsu Ramen," a new local ramen made with Izumi's proud brand of chicken, "Akadori Satsuma"; and "Izumikan Chicken," a new type of fried chicken made with Izumi's delicious citrus special sauce. After some hesitation, I decided to order "Izumikan Chicken," a menu item that was entered in the "Show-1 Gourmet Grand Prix," the Kagoshima Shopping District Gourmet No. 1 Championship. There are many manga on the walls of the restaurant, and while I was waiting while reading, the "Izumikan Chicken" came out. The set meal comes with a small side dish, pickles, rice, and miso soup. I wondered what citrus sauce would taste like on fried chicken, so I tried it, and it was a completely new sensation! The sweet and sour sauce and the juiciness of the fried chicken matched perfectly, and I encountered a taste I had never tried before. Of course, it was delicious! The owner who cooked was also very friendly, and told me a lot about sightseeing in Izumi, such as the samurai residences and other information about the surrounding area.
