Among the 4,100 or so storehouses in Kitakata, Yamatogawa Sake Brewery Kitakata Fuudokan is a long-established sake brewery founded in 1790. In 1990, the brewery was rebuilt as the Iidegura, about 1km out of the city, and the old storehouse was left open to the public. Inside the storehouse, old sake brewing methods, large sake barrels and tools are on display, and guides will give free tours of the three storehouses from the Edo, Taisho, and Showa periods, explaining how sake brewing and storage methods have changed over the years. An abundance of water, essential for brewing high-quality sake, springs up within the brewery and flows through the site as a river. This water is underground water from the sacred Mt. Iide. After a tour, enjoy some delicious sake at the tasting corner and shop, made from Kitakata sake, which is blessed with delicious rice and water.
