Tokyo Bunka Kaikan | Tokyo Bunka Kaikan -- Tokyo Bunka Kaikan was built by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as a project to mark the 500th anniversary of the founding of Tokyo in response to the demand for a full-scale music hall in the capital where opera and ballet could be held. It opened in April 1961 (Showa 36). Since then, many famous artists from around the world have performed at the hall, including opera, ballet, and classical music concerts. Combined with the excellent acoustics, which are said to be "miraculous," the hall has become known worldwide as "Tokyo Bunka Kaikan." The hall features a large hall (2,303 seats) for performances of opera, ballet, and orchestras, a small hall (649 seats) for chamber music and recitals, as well as rehearsal rooms, various conference rooms, and a music library that houses a specialized music library. The building is known as a representative example of modernist architecture designed by the late Kunio Maekawa, and is loved by many people as a "hall of music."
