Saikai City was established on April 1, 2005, through the equal merger of the five towns of Nishisonogi, Saikai, Oshima, Sakito, and Oseto. The new city has a population of 26,652 (as of the end of May 2021). The Hometown Donation System collects donations from people in their hometowns and those who want to support the city, and uses these donations to implement various projects and contribute to the revitalization of their hometowns.
